I was never taught by Simon while at school but had the pleasure of getting to know him as a collaborator on a couple of film projects my brother and I produced for KES. Simon spoke on camera about the life of Old Ed, JRR Tolkien with such passion and knowledge. I remember he was quite nervous when first speaking infront of camera but soon found his stride. He had a real impact on those finished documentaries. The last time I saw him we were in the Bodlean library in Oxford, enjoying the opening of a new Tolkien Exhibition - it was so clear how much he appreciated the chance to see some of Tolkien's work first hand and we talked excitedly and extensively about it afterwards. I know he had hopes to collaborate with my brother and I again on future projects and what a joy that would have been. Grateful we got the chance to know him as a man rather than a teacher alone. I know his impact on King Edward's and the boys who've moved through the school has been immeasurable. He will missed.
