Mr Stacey was ever-present during my time at King Edward’s. In the classroom, he brought life to syllabuses and taught with passion, supreme knowledge and witty humour. Outside of the classroom, he showed dedication to his students and would go above and beyond to offer his advice and assistance, none more so than with Debating Society. Mr Stacey’s after-school meetings in the Cartland Room would often run past 6pm and frequently descended into conversations about everything except the debate motion itself! He gave truly impactful guidance and, during competitions, dedicated hours and hours to ferrying us to venues by car and train. Then, like a manager during a cup final, would frantically provide us with our tactics in-between rounds. I remain indebted to Mr Stacey for giving me a love for advocacy and critical discussion. I also have Mr Stacey to thank for his unrivalled university and career assistance. For the two of us who applied to read law at university, he ran weekly sessions where we exhausted the past papers for the law admissions exams and did mock interviews. Those sessions ran so late that we were often the last people left in the school. Mr Stacey didn’t have to do any of this, but did so because he cared and wanted the very best for his students. He was also never afraid to give you a kick up the backside if he thought you were slacking. I distinctly remember spending all weekend producing an essay, only for Mr Stacey to say that it was “awful” and that I must re-write it. Frustrating at the time, but such high standards encouraged me to work harder and genuinely improve. A wonderful man and a truly inspiring teacher. Greg Leckey (2017)
