I primarily knew Mr Stacey through debating - he was a fantastic coach who shuttled me around the country for the better part of two years. I still remember our practice sessions in the Cartland Room after school - it was his kingdom and he commanded it through gentle sarcasm and incessant punnery. In the hours that I spent with him, I developed my argumentative faculties, benefitting from his rigorous and considered approach. His advice regarding subject choices and university preparation were similarly impactful. What I remember most fondly is our conversations in his car on the way to competitions - topics ranged from Spaghetti Westerns to Catholicism - indeed, they varied in all respects but one: Mr Stacey was never boring. I learnt a lot from him - and not merely in the academic sense. I am quite certain that I would neither be where I am, nor the person that I am today had I not met him. I was extremely sorry to hear the news of his passing and would like to send my condolences to his loved ones. He will be greatly missed. Shiv Mandal (2020)
